    1. I thought ego = I. Aren't id, ego and superego distinct from each other?

      Delete
    2. Yes you are right of course Bhavan. They are different from each other. Id precedes the ego.
Formable= pliant and the setter has used Ego= Id. With 'under control' being the insertion ind I think.
      Cannot explain the parsing otherwise.

    3. Thank you Doc. Seems ok except for I/ ID.

    4. id is the "ego/self under control" by both ego and superego. with is the container, imu

    5. Good point. I did mean EGO=ID...

  2. Would you pl. explain Doc.?
All I can see is I for ego. Is 'Under control' able?

  4. 8D- Only 'CLY' to be removed from Technology.
So, endlessly is cycle without both ends- YCL.
    We Have discussed 'endlessly' endlessly.

  7. 2D Chambers (BRB) does not list L= Lady. However Chambers Crossword Dictionary does have L under the entry for 'Lady'.

    1. doc, a general doubt. if k or kt is OK for knight then L or LT should be Ok for lady?

      Delete
    2. Hi the use of abbrevs, as you well know, comes from regular usage. In that context, kt is fine for knight. Kt was the old chess notation for knight before it was changed to N, and may still be used in some parts of the world.
I am not entirely sure where L is used for Lady (in English royalty perhaps?). Certainly cannot be Lt, for sure.

    3. KT comes from knight of thistle. And LT is Lady of thistle. But my doubt is cleared. Thnx doc.

    4. Yes, have used L for Lady before, have seen this in freedic and also in other crossies.

    5. Lt is usually for Lieutenant. Havent seen it for Lady.

  10. At the end of 1 hour, I had two pending 7A and 2d; then got busy in work and came back to the puzzle after a couple of hours and got both. Tough but gettable; loved the challenge. Thanks Bruno.

    1. vasanth..2d is really a challenge one.....puzzle demands that "taking lady out".so "L" must be removed. Rid = Relieve ; lady - Eve...RE (li-) MO +EVE ....is it so.....

      Delete
  11. As per Bhavan it is Rem + OVE (Love-L)
    It takes Rem from sleep.
On looking up, I found 'rem' as rapid eye movement/ twitching- not exactly sleep.

    1. That period of sleep is aka rem sleep

    2. Dictionary recognizes REM Sleep as:
Any of the phases of sleep accompanied by rapid eye movement
So, this clearly means that REM is not sleep. REM does not by itself mean sleep.

      Delete
    3. Yes.. But REM=Sleep is frequently used in Crossword land..

  12. Tough challenge - dunked in 3 without anno - ONTHEGO, REMOVE and FORMIDABLE. Typical Bruno puzzle with some difficult to parse wordplay. But lots of good clues as well SATIETY, TONNEAU, INSTALL, PEDESTAL were particularly nice
