16a indirect!
ReplyDelete16A is DD.
ReplyDeleteUneven walk
Being out of energy
+1 limp:without energy/vigor
DeleteI understood Col.'s interpretation as
DeleteResulting from- Impel (causing)
Eliminating 'e' from lack of energy
(IMPL)*
Or if we take resulting as anind, 'from' would give impel.
paddy, that is still an indirect
Deleteone of the meanings of impel is to cause.
DeleteSo, Doc.'s interpretation of DD seems in order? Yes.
DeleteLet me catch my breath- been underwater for too long!
ReplyDelete:-) but not that long; there were only 4 of 'em.
Delete1AC I liked very much.
ReplyDelete2DN I rememer bathyscape but not bathyscaphe
Overall, very satisfying grid. Thanks Neyartha

19A: Isn't "on a ship" redundant? SUB=coach going west, MARINE=soldier, to get SUBMARINE=underground vessel.
ReplyDeleteMarine is a soldier at sea, soldier on a ship, as against a foot soldier or an airforce man.
ReplyDeleteOnly half a neiyappam for me today. Couldn't get ADYTUM,BATHYSCAPHE & DIVING BELLS. Clue of my day: STEPHENSON.stepson and hen got together ?
ReplyDeleteHas any one seen answer for 6DN in yesterday's grid? LBW OR LAW?
ReplyDeleteYou want to guess what is the answer in the print edition of today?

DeleteSo none of us, here, basically have joined the paid version!
DeleteSince we are on the fun:
DeleteRule, change to "a mode of dismissal" in the middle.
B(bowled is a mode of dismissal). So change the middle of rule to b.
With def as "a mode of dismissal in the middle" (of wickets)! Semi&lit
Bowled over being stumped!
DeleteMy question over ? is when it was added?
DeleteDid Bhavan request (by mail) to mark it with ? after reading the blog or if it was originally so?
26a....Matinee usually denotes afternoon cinema. i am bit confusing that how come the word matinee matches with silver screen.
ReplyDeleteThe origin is in 1840's theatre with different meaning. Those were the times of evening and night plays only.(for serious patrons type). Matinee show then popularly attracted children/family as organised outing. Morning show or the 11am is a very late entrant.btw Matinee in French means morning.
DeleteSilver screen also means the film industry
DeleteCol.'s link has answers for your questions.
DeleteThe links given by him are always very informative and interesting.
