Dr RKE's TalePiece

This morning, I was TOTALLY engrossed in reading about how Scindia BACKSTABbed Kamalnath, when my wife called out from the KITCHEN. Not normally a person to HARASS me, today she was irritated that she could not once AGAIN find the ADAPTER to plug in the mixie. She always felt that my being a LITTERBUG was responsible for her woes. "Before the marriage you appeared to be a KNIGHT in shining armour, but now, JADED with age,  you NEVER seem to MIND my troubles" she said. That was such a MEAN thing to say, considering the fact that I had used up the entire salary ADVANCE to buy her a FRILLIER outfit, of IKAT for her birthday just a week back. She was ADAMANT that I put down the newspaper and help her out to EXPEDITE the search. You know the AGAMAs say that men who do not help out in their ABODEs, would be born as ZEBRA or IBEX in their next janma and would be forced to feed from a MANGER. That was not an ENNOBLing prospect, and so I reluctantly put down the newspaper and tried DROPping the HAMMER, to prove that I was a mere SATELLITE to her like million other husbands who INHABIT this planet.

  5. I have a query about 19D. Manger is the trough or box in a stable from which animals feed. Does it also refer to the stable itself? Are the 2 words considered synonymous?

    1. Similar query for Satellite/Dish

    2. In Christian works Jesus is referred to as being born in the manger, and I think that would refer to the place where the sheep are rather than the box from where they feed.

    3. Crib/cradle/stall/stable all merge in bethlem! Cribb is the source. But again no comment in the context of THC, since the usage is not common.

    4. Here is the reference from Thesaurus.com where it is listed as a synonym. I believe that originally the "manger" was just a ledge/extension within a stable or a stall where the fodder was kept. It has since become more common as a fodder box,

    Thanks Hypatia. Good fun :)

    1. Doc, Expedite (adj obsolete) is fast. In the game of table tennis there is an Expedite System where Expedite is used as an adjective - a rule used to speed up games

    2. Thanks SSv you are right. I did check the BRB to see the Expedite adj (obs) meaning as quick. So yes I can see there is an argument to be made in favour. Just felt one might have avoided an obsolete usage perhaps.

    3. Thanks Doc. Glad to know which clues you liked. Thanks for clarifying on expedite Avtaar. I agree that the obsolete meaning might have been misleading and could have been avoided Doc. Again with dishes for satellite, it is more correctly satellite dish - so "dishes, perhaps" might have been fairer. Apologies if this was misleading for solvers.

  8. Not able to justify expedite=fast even in usage. It is rather speed up (as a verb)

    1. Correct Rajuji - Litter Bug is the Spoonerism of "Bitter Lug". Thanks for sharing with us about the clues you liked.

BUTTER is a cryptic definition of "something that butts" like a "goat" or "ram" or in this case the "Ibex".

  14. Thanks for the blog Colonel and for the interesting talepiece Dr. RKE. You make the readers wonder if you had a story ready and tailored and the grid was made for that:) It is so seamless and adds to the fun. Thanks to all solvers who participated and gave your feedback on the grid as well. If you have any other comments do share them.

  15. Thanks. It is the joy of completing an engaging crossword that shows up in the tale. After all it is all of you setters who provide me with the fodder for the tale. Having said that, I must admit that the lack of relatedness between the words today made me think harder than usual and so thanks Hypatia, for the extra cerebral stimulation😊
