Dr RKE's TalePiece

A letter from a concerned solver REGARDING today's THC

Dear Avtaar,

I ATTEMPTED today's crossword but the result was not ASTOUNDING. I guess I could not get the right MANTRA to UNVEIL the secrets of the cryptic wordplay. It was not a failure ALTOGETHER, as I could  put the MERCHANT of Venice and the usurious BANKER together to get Morgan Stanley. Having seen the IAF pilots doing  "LOOP-THE-LOOP" during the MILITARY PARADE on Republic Day recently also helped. I was in cloud nine after filling in ALTOSTRATUS, but in a TORRENT of tears as I had to GIVE UP on 4A. Was left wondering how to deBUG 7D and what the KID was HIDING in 16A. Though not a fresh ENTRANT to solving and being well-up on astronomy, I found 17D not at all SIMPLE. The protection of the ROLL CAGE could not prevent the WINDS CUTTING BOTH SIDES in 19D. Wish I'd been able to solve MORE, but I end this letter with an APPEAL to not dumb down your future offerings, as we learn from such toughies, when we look it up on THCC, thanks to the laudable efforts of the Colonel and his dedicated band.
Thanks
Sincerely yours
I am no Mathrubootham

  1. 22D - YLEM [DD?] But top part of plant is XYLEM?

    1. How is that connected to forming of basic elements?
      YLEM means "A form of matter hypothesized by proponents of the Big Bang theory to have existed before the formation of the chemical elements." - From Free Dictionary

    2. Plume [or plumule of the seed] is botanical.
      E is coming from basic Elements
      This is my wild guess

      Delete
    3. It is XYLEM-X. Top (verb) to remove the top of - is the deletion indicator.

    4. however 22a, the first letter is not concerned with other grids. so Y or P can sit. but the setter's perception is different. in GooGLe 'YLEM' is bigbang theory which denotes mainly physics.

    5. Prasanna . Top (cut the top of), part of plant (xylem) from which basic elements are formed (definition as per chambers.

      YLem in physics is postulated as the primordial state of matter from which subatomic particles and elements were formed

  2. Part of plant: xylem, top: first letter, i.e. X, but no deletion indicator. As Colonel says it could be YLEM. Didn't get it though

    3. Yes. Top (v) is the deletion indicator

    4. 'A' is superfluous in the clue

    5. Col. - are you referring to 1D? A was added to indicate one of the tips of “mealtime”

      Delete
  3. MOR is defined by Free Dictionary as an organic substance like humus. Could that be indicated by 'meal'? Then tip of TIME is E, MOR +E = definition: ADDED.This is an afterthought; I got it from crossings and not by parsing

  4. Oh, I get it. The singular tio refers to this or that end of mealtime. Nice parsing sree_sree

    1. noun
      noun: spoonerism; plural noun: spoonerisms

      a verbal error in which a speaker accidentally transposes the initial sounds or letters of two or more words, often to humorous effect, as in the sentence "you have hissed the mystery lectures".

      temper=rage
      fuel = coal
      first indicates coal in front of rage.
      coal rage as pronounced by spooner is roll cage.

  7. The tailpiece - superb as usual

  8. Ramesh has indicated in the main post.
    Temper=Rage, Fuel=Coal
    Fuel first makes it Coal rage. Spooner makes it Roll Cage.
    I too found it a bit complicated,but got it after seeing the blog.
    Thank you Ramesh.

  12. Started off easy but found it quite challenging later! Missed YLEM. ALTOGETHER, ALTOSTRATUS, STEERS were some favourites. Thanks Avatar!

  13. Great clues, Avtaar. After seeing Ramesh's explanation felt like hitting myself for not getting CLEANSER, COUPLING and ASYLUM. No regrets about not getting TOBY. Didn't know about DUCK'S ASS. BALDRIC- i still don't get the connection to Zodiac

    2. That like the twins of Jove they seem'd in sight,
      Which deck the baldric of the heavens bright;
      They two, forth pacing to the river's side,
      Receiv'd those two fair brides, their love's delight;
      Which, at th' appointed tide,
      Each one did make his bride
      Against their bridal day, which is not long:
      Sweet Thames run softly, till I end my song

    3. Chambers gives one definition as the Zodiac. Reference is to Spenser as Sree Sree pointed out.

  15. Cracking puzzle! Loved the nuances and the intricate WP. Even the shorter 4 letter words were challenging(More-beautiful clue, my LOI and a PD moment & Toby). Coupling was beautifully coupled. Duck's Ass & Ylem were new words.. Couldn't get Ylem, though.
    Thanks Avtaar.

  16. Some less known terms today that had me checking the dictionary (roll cage, baldric, duck's ass, altostratus) made for a refreshing puzzle. I couldn't get 1D and 22D (learnt about YLEM for the first time). Thank you, Avtaar. This was very enjoyable.
