ReplyDeleteJust a thought. A star can be he or she. But a starlet is a she always. Why?
ReplyDeleteDear Mr. Prasad,
DeleteI don't think that the term starlet is necessarily 'female'. If so how come the young Indian cricket team that toured Pakistan sometime in 1961 was known as Indian Starlets? One of the members of the well-known cricketing family of Madras (not Tamilian but with Punjabi links) - A G Milkha Singh was a member of this Indian Starlet team.
Unfortunately, the website Cricinfo doesn't have details of this but certainly, the Archives of The Hindu as well as the Sports & Pastime will be the authentic source to ascertain about this Indian Starlets team.
Pardon me for straying away from the point raised by you.
Regards
Suresh Panje
Thank you, Mr. Panje. Have not come across the usage cited by you. I went by the common usage and more particularly by the dictionary definition of the term. I am not trying to drive home my point but we don't refer to an upcoming hero as a starlet. Regards.
DeleteStarlet(in sport) can refer to a young promising sports player, hence the term 'Indian Starlets' was given to the young team that toured Pakistan, as you correctly point out. In the context of theatre however, starlet refers only to a young, promising actress. Food for thought indeed!
DeleteThank you, doctor.
