    Gridman always used to say-whenever you have a doubt refer to a dict. It very much applies to this. I also id not know but when I referred I came to know that ling also means heather,a type of plant.

  12. Kudos to Incognito for setting this sportive grid. In fact, (not out of any ego but in all humility) I was delighted on being able to solve all the clues in less than an hour and in the process learnt a new word while attempting 14-D, courtesy the Thesauras in my Collins Dictionary!
