Ajeesh’s points are on point. We should avoid these as setters.
DeleteAlso there are some nounal anagrinds (18A, 5D, 8D, 19D), and redundant connectors in DD clues (28A, 16A, 28A). Experienced setters have advised me to avoid connectors in double-definition clues in general.
In 3 Down, my opinion is that ‘insides of’ works as a central-letters-picking ind, but looks awkward as an insertion indicator.
In 6D, would have personally revised ‘protected’ to ‘protecting’.
But just to be fair and add my two cents, we shouldn't blame Anon for any of these. Setters are as much beset by life’s troubles as solvers are. Plus, they are working hard to be creative for the enjoyment of solvers. Besides, as Colonel’s blog has taught me so far, as long as solvers are ultimately able to successfully suss out every clue on their own steam, imperfect cryptic grammar is not the worst thing in life?
