ReplyDeleteA doubt about 12A. Noisly strip is bear(~bare ). bare skin is nude (adjective). so how strip becomes bearskin?
You strip to bare your skin
DeleteCol. Saab,
DeleteSuperb quip from you!!!
3dn INFIDEL (RA) IN anind? How?
ReplyDeleteIn:Hot, fashionable
DeleteOh! Thank you Vasant! 😊
DeleteI don't think it is RA. It is reverse container (don't know if that's the correct term). Field= fid carrying el= in fid el. I came across a similar clue recently in a thread. Cox at me (6,3,6). By Auraucaria. Answer is INCOME TAX RETURNS.
DeleteHow do fid el come into picture?
DeleteIncome tax returns clue is fine as far as WP is concerned.
DeleteFI(EL)D = IN FID EL. That's how I got it. But I might be wrong.
DeleteI mean fid and el do not per say mean anything, do they?
DeleteAh ok. Fair enough.
DeleteIn and fashionable are not valid anagrinds. Hot is an anagrind (hot = violent). Fashion is a verbal anagrind (fashion = to build). I think the wordplay given by DB is correct here though as Vasant said fid and el are not real words. But that's ok for the wordplay, IMO.
DeleteIMU, we need to just look at the etymology and read in- Latin as "not". Field is not Fidel.
DeleteBut it would be better to hear a word from the setter.
DeleteAs a solver accepting IN as anagrind would open a Pandora's box.
Explanation given by Debasmita is what Hypatia had in mind (as mentioned in a separate discussion, I don't think she has seen the blog today). It is not a RA but a reverse container.
DeleteYes it is similar to INCOME TAX RETURNS - FID and EL are not valid standalone words though.
Of course, with the letter O as the lead, I solved the 1-D. However, not that I am a cricket buff, the so-called game in the name of IPL or T20 in particular, I goofed up at the very outset by reckoning 1-A as OPENER.
ReplyDeleteIn a nutshell, I wish to hail Madam Sowmya (Hypatia) for setting an interesting grid today....
Supply is indicated as anagrind in Chambers.
ReplyDeleteLots of good clues, liked 1D best!
ReplyDelete21D was my favourite.
ReplyDeleteNice grid. Missed WING.
ReplyDeleteMy fav - OSTRICH, KETCHUP, CAN OPENER
Thanx Sowmya
