DeleteLiked the marathon. It was Athens where it was run for the first time!
ReplyDeleteRead up Battle of Marathon
DeleteOh. There was indeed a battle of marathon !! I thought running a marathon is like a battle and answered that clue.
DeleteIt's a watershed moment in world history.
Delete"Pheidippides, a messenger in Ancient Greece, ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greeks' victory over the Persians." That's the origin legend.
Deleteyeah, and the first olympics took place in athens, greece.
Delete13A cellophanes fellow: chap sticks : canes
ReplyDeleteSpooner ?
DeleteThe answer is CELLOPHANES but not sure if the spoonerism works. The C is pronounced as S, so spoonerism would be fellow sanes and not canes, isn't it? Request other solvers and Vidwan to clarify.
Delete+1 Ramki
Delete+2 but spoonerism has become an abracadabra. General hint at some words and have a DJ mix
DeleteThanks for the observation Ramki. The Oxford definition of spoonerism- "A verbal error in which a speaker accidentally transposes the initial sounds or letters of two or more words". There are other definitions which are narrower and include only transposition of sounds. And some limit it further to consonants sounds only.
DeleteThe broadest definition of spooneridm includes transposition of letters besides transposition of sound.
I agree it is not the most commonly encountered form but a spoonerism nevertheless. Canes pronunciation after the transposition of letters will natural be the canes.
That is my understanding.

Delete6dn. NOTICED: seen
ReplyDelete1/10: DECI- (deci as such is not a word) prefix indicating one-tenth
TON: 100
1/10 + 100 is DECITON
Inverse. Is noticed

LUSTROUS - glowing

upper-class female - sanguine
liberated - takeaway indicator
So OUS
But R?
Nope. And Friday is for novice test out. So please avoid reverse engineering s.
DeleteThanks Prasad garu for the suggestion.
DeletePS: I continue to consider myself a novice, promoted prematurely though! 😀
Rufous is reddish. Upper class - U and Female - F. LUST R(UF)OUS
Delete🙏 Got it now!
Delete24D BADMOUTH = to mock. (to hum)* is mouth, which is formed badly.
ReplyDeleteIts 24A not 24D
DeleteTo hum is mouth formed badly
DeleteWhere did BAD come from? Give the complete annotation
DeleteNot sure col. I thought ' to hum' which is bad 'mouth' gives badmouth, meaning to mock.
ReplyDeleteIt is a RA. >reverse anagrsm

ReplyDelete9 Groovy street talk, short and powerful, having revolutionary strain (8) - STRIATED
ReplyDeletedef = groovy (having grooves)
street = ST
talk, short and powerful = TED (https://www.ted.com)
revolutionary strain = AIR<< = RIA
ST + TED around RIA (having is container ind) => STRIATED
Very tough clue, well done!
ReplyDelete8D- (A M HYDRA SHAPED)*- Poorly is anind. M from Mega.
ReplyDeleteProvince- old name for a state. Madras was a province during British days.
Province is not a state.
DeleteI don't think it is wrong.
Deleteadministrative district, administrative division, territorial division - a district defined for administrative purposes- from Free dic.
And so is 15D Encomium!
ReplyDeleteSTRIATED, TOUCHY, AUSTRIA, BADMOUTH, TURNIP were some favs today. For TURNIP, the clue should have been "one penny" since it is singular?
ReplyDeleteDidn't get the anno for LUSTROUS till I saw the blog.
Thanks Vidwan!
Chambers gives P for Pence too
Deletep can be used for both penny and pence. What I meant was - since the surface uses "one" it has to be "penny" and not "pence" (which is plural)
DeleteOh, yes. I got it. You are right. Thanks
DeleteMy slipup Ramki. Thanks for pointing it out.
