ReplyDeleteA little tough but enjoyable all the same.
ReplyDeleteCould not do a few, could not get the annos for a few more.
Never thought anagrams could be tough- of course it would have been difficult to get 18A or 9D without the help of anagrams.
We get into the A in numbering on printless day.
Col.
ReplyDeleteA small niggle in 4D.Def.is only "subject for shrink". Not simple giving complex is part of the answer.
Felt happy getting this before seeing the blog.
Thanks, have corrected it
DeleteRead- "not simple"
ReplyDeleteReally nice clueing style. Niceties was an amusing wordplay.
ReplyDeleteNo paper today and facebook app doesn't seem to be working of late. Online version requires printing out, too much hassle. Wish THC would make it interactive like the Guardian
ReplyDeleteThe app is working at the Orkut site
DeleteCol: I tried accessing Orkut via the link to the left on this page. I get only the clue list, not the grid. Am I missing something?
DeleteI tried it and it worked fine.
DeleteWhen you reach Orkut go to Home.
On the right panel, you will see the names of the Communities you have joined. It would include The Hindu Crossword.
Skip it and scroll down a little further.
You will see "applications" where you will have The Hindu Crossword apart from any other that you have signed into. By clicking it, you should be able to get today's crossword.
Sorry if you knew all this, did all this and yet without success.
No, I did not know, thanks for the elaboration. But I don't seem to have succeeded yet. I think I tried joining quite some time back. When I checked just now, I see a status message which reads: "Moderated community
DeleteYour membership application is still waiting approval. Cancel the application"
Ah well!
Whatever. The app does not have today's crossword only yesterday's. That was the position when I checked at around 10 am.
DeleteSUNDAY SPECIAL: I could finish this with a lot amount of flitting about between the grid and the clues, causing severe eye-strain. Since our mind-set is also on closed words or squares, I cannot feel happy with the grid and the numberings, agreed though it is a mind-bender to solve the puzzle. Any day for me, the normal grids and the clues along side. Baah !! BooH !!

ReplyDeleteSuresh called me. He will be in Chennai shortly. He said he could spare some time to meet some members of this Community on Sat evening. It will be good if you and any others interested can make it. Let's await details from him.
Willing, eager and able. Look forward to more. Anything I can do in helping out or hosting, do let me know
DeleteDeepak: I just finished today's (14th Nov, 2012) crossword online thanks to Orkut. But how come what I have solved is different from what you have posted 10618A by ARDEN ?
ReplyDeleteRaju,
DeleteYesterday there was no print edition in some cities including Bangalore, however there was an online edition carrying crossword number 10618 which was solved and published in the blog yesterday. The paper carriedin Bangalore today carried 10618A which was published in the blog. The online edition today however carries both 10618 & 10618A and since the App can pick up only one of them it took the first one which happens to be 10618. Mystery solved?
Ah, there !! Strange are the ways of the Publishers ! Is there any way I can print and preserve the solved crossword and the clues alongside for my records? Or in the least, I can save it on my PC?
ReplyDeleteI'm for ever seeking enlightenment on the cyberspace ! Lead me, kindly, to the LIGHT please !
As mentioned by CV earlier I am in Chennai on Saturday and would love to meet the other crossword nuts that evening. I suggest some time after 6.30 pm. Those who can meet pls get in touch with me at dorbala@yahoo.com or CV and we can decide the venue and exact time.
ReplyDeleteWhy crossword nuts? Is it because we crack the puzzles? To us, nuts is a demeaning word and I'd rather prefer buffs, fads or better still, aficionados !!
DeleteNuts and bananas are only good with each other when in a banana split, which is my favourite to be shared one by two with my beloved !
Or am I shooting a raspberry?

ReplyDeleteThese programs draw material from websites automatically as programmed - without human intervention.
It draws all right the crossword in print/online edition dated Nov 13. Nov 14 does not have print edition in all centres but only in certain upcountry places. There they must have used 10618A. The website in its Miscellaneous section has both 10618 and 10918A in edition dated Nov 14 (if you wish you can take a print of 10618A and solve it) but the app seems to draw only 10618 (which you solved and made public your solution) and not 10618A as it visits the website as per date and imports what is available someplace obeying inbuilt commands without making distinctions of the contents.
There is nothing like the human brain.
I guess tomorrow's Chennai edition among others will move on to 10619 (carrying the solution of 10618 alongside), they skipping this A crossword.
Tomorrow the print editions published today will have 10619 and solution to 10618A while Chennai and other centres will have 10619 and solution to 10618.
So for you, 10618A can be got only as a print from the website edition.
(I cudgelled my poor brain to figure all this out.)
The paper is not responsible for contents of external websites nor the behaviour of these apps.
Deepak's version differs slightly from mine but both of us mean the same thing. My version is probably more apt but I don't know!
ReplyDeleteRead The website in its Miscellaneous section has both 10618 and 10618A in edition dated Nov 14
ReplyDelete(correcting typo)
Perhaps the app looks only at five digits such as 10618 and so today when it sweeps the online edition (or visits, I don't know the technical term) it ignores the letter A and imports only that crossword.
ReplyDeleteLast time, in the absence of print edition the exact thing suggested by you happened- the print edition the next day completely ignored the A (on line edition) So those who follow only print edition will never know about the A edition.
ReplyDeleteRaju
ReplyDeleteYou've solved 10618 online.
(I guess you don't buy the paper.)
To answer your query:
To be able to have a proof of your having solved this, get a copy of the print edition dated Nov 13 from a friend, tear out the crossword and fill in the answers.
Raju @ 1:00
ReplyDeleteThe problem is only when there is no print edition as the online edition always has the CW. You can lways copy the CW from the online edition and print it. In case you want the Grid and clues for 10618A, here's the link http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-miscellaneous/the-hindu-crossword-10618-a/article4094382.ece
In case you still cannot get it let me know and I shall mail it to you in word format.
Nice one again from Arden.
ReplyDeleteFor 18A, I think 'pertaining to a large congregation' should be treated as the defn. Large congregation taken alone should mean archdiocese.
ABCDE will follow a very erratic (if it already wasn't erratic enough) schedule till at least Nov 23.
I been meaning to ask you.... What's ABCDE?
DeleteA bonus clue dealt everyday
ReplyDeleteOh all right

Thanks a lot, Deepak and CV , for clarifying on the keetaanus that creep into the cyberspace in relation to parallel puzzles in the THCC online and print editions. I stand sufficiently clarified.
ReplyDeletePoor Bhavan even sent me a copy by email of the print version which I'm yet to solve. Thanks Bhavan, very thoughtful of you.
