  2. Small typo in anno for 13a

10 Green-eyed monster, shorter version (4) ENVY ? Anno pending

The gem is usually jealousy or envy. envy is the shorter of the two.

  3. 18 Ornamental piece worn on shoulder by alien escorting saint close to collapse (7) EPAULET {E}{PAUL}{ET}

Could this be E(PAUL E)T, since alien is 'escorting' 'saint close to collapse' ie ET is around PAUL E

SNAFU shows the WIKI site for ATLAS.

    1. Then it perfectly illustrates what a SNAFU is !

    2. Tamer version is Systems Normal All Fouled Up.

    3. SNAFUs are ok. It is FUBARs which are scary.

  5. Kishore 8:37 You are a true gentleman in having presented the tamer version of SNAFU.

Missed only two or three. Got EPAULET, a new word for me, from Google. The 14-lettered anagrams were eyesome and awesome.

  6. My post 8:44 - a goof-up. It should be eyeful and not eyesome.

  7. 10D - ENVY

Some nostalgia: Some friends here may recall a banner ad run by LMV scooters (of UP) in newspapers, for their new NV version. It said something like this:

'From now on, there will be just two categories of people - Those who own NV and others who just envy'.

    1. How about the Onida printer's devil: Owner's envy, neighbour's bride !

    2. How come I've never heard of that one?!

    3. I think Kishore wrote exactly what he meant ! or vice versa

    4. Ramesh is perfectly correct. That's why there was a ref to the printer's devil...

  8. Thanks Sankalak. There is no one to beat you in giving us a smooth CW Puzzle

  9. Eagerly waited for Kishore's opening lines on 'Gentleman's gentleman' and I was not disappointed. Got Epaulet (had heard of it earlier) but not 'Fealty' (and hence had some trouble in getting Atlas.

Sankalak stamp is unmistakable. ( I hope my spelling is right. I had trouble with 'Tameable')

  10. Thank you Richard for the nice LMV scooter ad. Don't remember seeing it at that time.

  13. I had a question on classification of clues. What is the difference between E & GK ?

For example why is 26A GK vs 25A E ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ramesh,

E & GK are something which I have coined. They are not cryptic in the true sense.

E would mean a clue which is a straightforward dictionary meaning and GK would mean something one would know but not there in a dictionary, for example a quote from literature etc.

    2. Thanks for the clarification Col.

  14. Loved solving this.

    Just one doubt on the

Shouldn't it be CAT instead of CATS in the clue?

24d They are a source of energy when seen nabbing cats (5) ATOMS

    As per the post

    when seen = as
    cats = tom
    as nabbing tom = a{tom}s

  15. Great puzzle once again today. I fouled up my SW corner by putting TALUS (instead of ATLAS), confusing myself thinking of Achilles heel...

In response to CV's yesterday comment of 1:33pm; yes I am a different Sridhar -- I do not visit Orkut and not a member thereof. Its been about 6-8 months since I started on the crossword journey so still a "fresh solver".

      O for Ohio ? Isn't it OH ?

      Delete
    3. MP member of parliament is not obscure. It's use quite regularly in CW's

      Delete
    4. Mp = member of parliament = some one who represents ( or supposed or at least claims to represent) us

Both Oh & O seem to be abbreviations for Ohio.

And how do you relate potatoes to Sankalak ?

    5. Oh, thanks. Didn't know that MP's were otherwise called representatives. Well anywayz, politics is not my thang.
