ReplyDelete20A WINE (W+I (tops of West and Indian) plus not sure why NE
ReplyDelete25A GILDED (L for lost inside DIG going up, plus DE (also going up but no indicator?apparently for German)
Thought the clues were all a bit too wordy, and the syntax and principles of clueing not strictly applied
NE comes from Cardinals
DeleteAgree on the clues being too long-winded
Delete.de is the Internet code for Germany
DeleteAh yes, Cardinals seems to be doing double duty, unless WI is standard abbreviation for West Indian.
DeleteDE for Germany: yes, no problem, but the clue loses a bit of integrity by saying 'the' and 'German'
Good fun nonetheless
Why is Cardinals=NE ?
DeleteN, S, E & W are the four cardinal points
DeleteThanks :) I was only thinking along religious lines
DeleteChecked and found that WI is indeed standard abbreviation for both West Indies and West Indian. Perfect.
Delete20A : Wine WI from West Indies, Not sure of anno for NE

Continuing my report after some time in the cold and wilderness:
After the initial preparation of climbing the Bunker Hill monument, sounding out the Puget Sound, laying claim to all clams and casing Fort Casey, we had hit the trek trail last week a trial trek to Rattlesnake ledge in the Snoqualmie part of the cascades. Snow called me and Mt Tacoma trek was attempted yesterday. When we hit Paradise and snow was visible the Tamil in me said 'paar Da ice'. Some two km up the track the cloudy weather got cloudier, then Rainier became snowier. Worsening weather, with kids in hand sent us scuttling back to Paradise. Gar firdaus ruhe zaminast,.....

Bhala:For stray I took the definition as "Deviate from Course" ("And tends to" is superfluous) which reiterates your point of clues losing their integrity
ReplyDeleteYes, sure. I don't suppose there was any issue with getting the solution. But a great clue fell short of something, that's all
DeleteI don't want to bark up a wrong tree but this BARKER was a Biter alrught!~ Enjoyed it but had to print out and the entire RHS got eaten up by the printer !
ReplyDeleteYet, BINGO ! without any CONTINUITY, could do the other ones OVERALL ! BEMUSE (D)?
