      For Line cut
While shooting, the director and assistant director create a line cut by instructing the technical director (or vision mixer in UK coinage) to switch between the feed from the individual cameras.

    1. Wouldn't DUCKLING as a baby would be more appropriate.

    2. Suckling is what I had in mind. But duckling works as well.

  8. I was surprised how Vulcan can appear for a second time. I was puzzled.
    But I didn't figure out - I cannot figure out - it's Sunnet's turn.

May I suggest that though the paper has erred, you change the byline in the header here so that Sunnet gets his credit - especially as the author has owned it.

  14. Slight criticism perhaps in this clue, as answer contains part of def.? Network could have been substituted with a synonym.

  15. Here's a reproduction of a comment on yesterday's blog, posted by CV this morning so some of you'll may not have seen it

Bedbug, the insect that pricks us when we are not necessarily in bed but, say, an old cane sofa at home or the rickety, creaking chair in the still-surviving ancient film theatres of Madras, is one word. My authority is myself and my favourite Chambers, since looked up.

Wives, whom men prick sometimes, tend to nag their husbands like 'nachchu, nachchu' as they say in Tamil during the tender night, and criticise every one of the husband's relatives. These complaints may be called bed bugs. Athority: myself and myself alone.

Or, if a husband/wife suspecting the fidelity of wife/husband, plants surveillance devices in conjugal cot in the bedroom, they are bed bugs. Authority: ibid.

  16. CV:
Must be a bugging nuisance in a nuptial bed , when one finds a bug secretely planted in one's bed ! Being such a tiny insect, why have the Tamilians dubbed it as a MOOTA POOCHHI?

Don't forget the Duranto Express and its ubiquitous inhabitants. The joke that runs is: If you have found a few of this malcontents in the house, you will be asked : Have you recently travelled by the IRs ?
Natchu Natcu by nagging wives is to make the husbands naach naach to their tunes ?
these malcontents proliferate faster by the millions in cane chairs and the only solution is to burn them with their abodes.

    1. Wherever 14 appears in a clue substitute it with the solution to Clue 14 (across - there is no 14 down and so the ind ac is not needed).

You know the solution to 14, don't you?

      Delete
    2. Doc,

14 refers to clue number 14, the answer to which is Cricket. So substitute Cricket for 14 in the other clues wherever it appears.

  18. I am not making a commercial promotion for a product.

We stay in an apartment. I am told that the problem of migratory pests like cockroaches is quite common in most apartment condominiums.

We have tried different methods like aerosols and Lakshman Rekha chalk to get rid of household pests like mosquitoes, flies and cockroaches, which met with only brief rounds of success.

Last year, I was asked by a shopkeeper to try BELONA or BLOSSOM brand joss-sticks (or agarbattis). They are made in Bangalore and Mysore. Mind you, they are not meant for pooja or religious purposes, but exclusively to bump off pests.

They come in glossy packs of three sticks, and the pack costs, for the time being, about Rs 12. Just light one or two in the bedrooms, kitchens or living rooms, leave overnight, and, lo, the next morning, there will be a big haul to clear off. CARE: Keep the room locked tight and DO NOT use the room until morning.

The shopkeeper told me that it kills bedbugs, lice and mosquitoes also. The smoke is said to be non-toxic and safe for humans. It smells like a petroleum-based product, more like kerosene oil. I have found it highly effective.

I had no intention of making an endorsement here, but hearing Raju making a mention of burning heritage pieces like cane chairs prompted me to make a mention.

I leave it to individual discretion.

    14? 14?
I'm only good at deciphering lettersand not numerals.

but 14 is a good number after 13 2hich is inauspicious

  22. Ramesh,

This is not 14! (Though I now know you are not to be blamed) I did not know while doing the CW this AM that you were the setter! No 17D connection the whole of yesterday and till now today. Missed all the fun this morning (and yesterday too)It is unfortunate that the cricket theme had to appear on the day of India's defeat when all of us want to forget it. Enjoyed it all the same and though I had a few holes left, I had the theme words alright. Realised how much we are dependent on Google while searching for Gods (I mean the Babylonian variety) & minearals.

    1. Since the Gods & and the mineral were not common words they were clued as anagrams/telescopic clues giving solvers a sporting chance of getting it without net/dictionary

  23. Hi
Wanted to share my first android app which was inspired by solving anagram clues in the THC and bullseye/spellathon in the TOI.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.KauphiHouse.BullsEye

Do check it out and if you like it spread the word & rate the App on the android play store !
    Enjoy

  24. Yes, I do agree. But still it would be a guess until we get it confirmed- either with the help of google or with Col.! ( and of course I needed the net for both)
Thank you for a good start for the week. I enjoyed doing it today.

I do not know whether you all are aware of the mystic of the Fibonacci series credited to Fibonacci in 1200 AD but discovered more than 4000 years ago by Brahmabhatta. These numbers are found in nature in the number of petals of a flower, arrangement of seeds in sun-flower, the eyes in the feathers of a peacock when it dances etc etc.
It is 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21...etc and if you take the reciprocals of these numbers and add them, we get the golden ratio of about 1.61...

  26. How is 14A deciphered (or cold-solved (solved coldly?))? I put it in rather reluctantly, not having an anno. but only the answers to some of the other clues involving "14".

4A - Does "March" play a role in the cryptic?

    8D - E for Asian?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. March also means boundary
14A : When you say 'it is not cricket' you mean to say that something is not fair or is underhand.
