    1. 23d The setter's intention is clear. Wonder whether alternative serves same purpose as alternate.
The adjective alternate means ‘every other or every second’.
Alternative, on the other hand, means ‘available as another possibility or choice’

    2. Agree NR... it should have been alternately, setters fault

  35. Until yesterday Rahul was a NONENTITY.
But after passing his written and ORAL exams he had been hand-picked for the plum job.
There he was now in Mainland China with his BOSS, a business ICON, and an Angel Investor from Peru
    for HOBNOB.
Rahul ordered for LOBSTER and MUSTERED courage to speak about his project.
His PREFERENCE was for the housing sector and not the commercial sector.
Like an ALCHEMIST who might want to transform base metal to noble, Rahul wished
    to transform the housing sector.
A hundred DRONES were required for his project. These would be put to use round the clock -
    NOCTURNAL and diurnal.
None could REPLICATE his methods. If they dared to, he had enough plans to COUNTERACT.
    Advertisements would be through SKYWRITING!!
    But alas!
The investor would show no COMPASSION !
His questions were like NEEDLES and Rahul could not give convincing answers....
The cheque book on the table lay UNOPEN. The investor SPOKE briefly about the
    SNOWY project.
He removed his EYEWEAR, placed two DINEROS on the table and walked out.
Probably he wanted to say that he cared two hoots for the project?
Rahul's boss thought that he had faced his NEMESIS.
On the way back Rahul told his Boss: "But don't we have enough suckers?"
