Welcome to Hypatia.
Three answers per commenter (Annotations compulsory).
Please provide all your answers in one comment.
Please note that this Crossword was first published on 1Across, so many of you would have already done the CW there. Those of you who have already solved the CW are requested to wait till 12 Noon before commenting here. This is being done to ensure that those who have not seen the puzzle earlier get a headstart in try cracking it.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
Each solution must be entered in the grid after omitting it's first letter. The Enums referred in brackets is for the number of letters that are to be entered in the grid after taking off the starting letter. For example if the answer to a clue is SUNDAY only UNDAY is to be entered in the grid ie., without the starting letter S.
All these starting letters that are dropped need to be jumbled to give you the answer to question asked at the end of the clues.

Across Lite version can be accessed at HYPATIA 1
Enjoy.
On tapping HYPATIA, Acrosslite doesn't open ! Why ?
ReplyDeleteAny way, as I have already done this in 1 Across Group and submitted there, I can only wait until noon, as advised above. A disappointment on a Sunday.
No problem as far as opening of Acrosslite is concerned.
DeleteNo disappointment. This is one of the most ingenious puzzles that I have done. So relishing once again by redoing it.

***Haven't completed/submitted answers/grid over there. My solving power has become quite rusty and nowadays even a Rufus may be daunting!
Recently I read a Comment by an Englishman elsewhere that his mother was an expert crossword solver but now at 85 years she is quite unable to solve even a couple of clues.
Far from it and you are far away from 85. It is just that little bit of reluctance to solve as compared to set.
DeleteBTW,you have grabbed one of my answers!
I agree with CV. I gave up when I had one left as I just couldn't crack it. Made an error elsewhere too so couldn't solve the quote at the end
DeleteBut you are completing grids daily- well, almost (except maybe for ExChequer!) That too before 8.30 am. So I consider this as just one off.
Delete11A- (F)ingernails.
ReplyDeleteDef.- Handy tips
12A- ALON- (Talon-T)
me(TALON)ce-T
28D- (G)oods-DD
ReplyDeleteNot the Anno. that I intended,
DeleteIs the solution wrong too?
DeleteThe Solution is fine. It’s not a DD though it appears like that.
DeleteThank you. I will work on it again.
DeleteThank you for the wonderful brain teaser. Your efforts seem to be as much (if not more) as ours.
Thanks. Had fun setting it, so didn’t seem like work :)
Delete15d: unbreakable {bun baker ale}*
ReplyDelete8A Meeting holder's torn attire (6) WE(BIN)AR
ReplyDelete22A Caught by Spooner, say judge almost splits (8) C + REV + ASSES(s)
21D That woman lived poorly packing clutter (7) DI(SHE)VEL*
This was fun! Thanks, Hypatia!
8A was the one I couldn't crack
DeleteThat was a good solve by Fraser.
DeleteIt is coined from web-seminar. Too modern to immediately come to mind. I was thinking about cabinet.
Thanks Fraz. If you are on FB, check out our group too..
DeleteI'm not on FB, but I see that I'm able to see some of the content anyway just from Google.
Delete30A- (A)NGEL- First leters of 'Anyone noble.....lovable'
ReplyDeleteThis is replacement for 11A done by CV.
1d: urban {pRRe}{BAN}
ReplyDeleteTypo {pURe}{BAN}
DeleteI full concur; one of the most clever compiling and I wondered what software was used.
ReplyDeleteCV: The more you solve, the better your skills develop. I disagree that your capacity to solve has waned. You have probably gone through an overdose ? Once a solver, always one. Unless you had gone to a Rehab centre. This is one addiction that's healthy as any mood enhancer.
Paddy: I normally can open once I click on the compiler's name but today, it takes me to the next step of the Acrosslite logo and then returns me there without opening. Is it because I have already done the stuff in the Acrosslite via 1 Across?
I don't think so.
Delete6D (s)OCIAL MEDIA [AS I CLAIMED - O]*
ReplyDeleteIf you had read the 1 Across comment, the setter had took us through the setting process. The answer to the question was first done and then the grid was reverse filled in manually. So no software.
ReplyDeleteThis is on reply to Raju@10:59

ReplyDeleteThis Hypatia is super smart too-a super solver, setter and administrator!

Down - 3, 4, 5, 7, 14, 19, 23, 24, 29
Others can chip in now, but only 3 per commenter
ReplyDeleteCool solve. Not sure about the clue though. Tore into rather than torn would be more appropriate, I thought. Anyway, holder=Bin escaped me -wouldn’t have got it
ReplyDeleteSince I have used “Holder’s”, it should be Torn - The Clue should be read as Holder has torn attire. Tore will work for holder rather than holder’s IMO
DeleteHave solved this on FB 1 AC. My 3..
ReplyDelete17A BESTRIDE BEST RIDE
3D SERENADED SEREN{AD}E + D
13A REFINED RE{FINE}D
Great Puzzle Hypatia. It is obvious how much effort must have gone into creating the grid! Thanks for the brilliant entertainment :)
I had put in FAST RIDE for 17A and thus couldn't solve the final question

ReplyDeleteAmazing puzzle, Hypatia!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Glad you enjoyed it
DeleteAll done , I suppose ? I'm still having trouble opening Acrosslite. For a toughie like this one, our diehards have clambered on to the Leaderboard rather rapidly ! Good job. May we have many more ! Good that Col has given a chance to others who had not done this on 1 Across Group. Thanks to him and HYPATIA.
ReplyDeleteWho is to take the answers to the questions?
ReplyDeleteIs it open for all?
- - - - - ARE BUT - - - - - - - - OF OUR - - - - - - - - (5,3,3,8,2,3,8)
ReplyDelete(WORDS) ARE BUT (PICTURES) OF OUR (THOUGHTS)
This was the tour de force of the puzzle. A 32 letter anagram ( actually 23 if you discount the 9 letters given). Amazing!
DeleteJust got it too. I was wondering whether to put it out or wait for all solutions to come in.
ReplyDeleteHypatia,
ReplyDeleteOut of curiosity what is the anno you had in m ind for 28D?
Most interesting CW I have ever done and enjoyed it thoroughly. Happy I was able to complete the sentence as well. A BIG Thank You!!
I think Fine=Good=G; fines=GG=Goods?
Deleteor Fine=good; fines=good+s
DeleteThat was what I had in mind.
DeleteDoes it not become a DD?
Doesn't that become a charade?
DeleteYes, your interpretation is correct Vasant, it’s a charade with a bit of Elision.
Delete7D- Rev. refers to Spooner?
ReplyDeleteReverend Spooner. In a spoonerism clue, either he is referred to as Spooner or as Reverend.
DeleteI thought so, but had a doubt. Thank you Vasant.
DeleteThanks to all of you who tried the puzzle and for your wonderful feedback. I am glad that you all had aa much fun with it as I did, Here are the results..http://www.1across.org/2018/03/04/starting-off-solutions-annotations-results/
