  16. 1Ac. I have some objection. The word divine (as a verb) is used to guess something intuitively through some unexplained/unexplainable method. Whereas INFER is used always for arriving at a conclusion logically.

    1. One meaning of infer is to guess, speculate, surmise
One meaning of divine to guess or know by inspiration or intuition.

    2. I think Vanchinathan, an academic that he is, has a point.
'Inferring' is something more than mere guessing. It is 'deducing' -There is something before some other thing is inferred.
"Divining' is discovering something by intuition or guessing.
Having said that, I would say that such nice distinctions may not be kept in crossword clue definitions.
After all good thesauruses do list 'infer' under synonyms for 'divine'.
In theses and dissertations, why even in formal writing of lesser nature , we must certainly use the precise word by picking the synonym with exact shade of meaning.
Over definitions in crossword clues let us do what the Varrier woman did.
