  1. LIGHTNING has worked in all EARNEST to produce this INSPIRATIONAL grid and set of clues! Do I sense an INNUENDO, that suggests even if you are a RAJA, if you go out in a SINGLET ( to show your SPARTAN simplicity) in the heat of MADRAS or the nearby RURAL AREA, you are bound to get a SUNTAN, if not a sunstroke? So, wave away any such IDEA. The STRATEGEM to avoid such a misfortune is to have MINESTRONE for rehydration but take care to STRAIN it first.
3D ALMONER is a non-medical person, a social worker, who works in a British hospital. So hospital worker or hospital official could have been better choices in the clue, instead of 'medical official'
15A 'Speech' in the clue suggests a noun, but ORATE, the solution is a verb. Is this acceptable?

  2. 17DN ELF is the definition. S is coming from "leader sees"

  3. +1 for Sunta and Orate.
    Otherwise an enjoyable solve.

  4. MADRAS now is looking for an INSPIRATIONAL leader to help the State and our NATION and ensure its ASCENT.

One from an urban or RURAL AREA who not only ORATES about his IDEAS but will go about his job in right EARNEST.

Meanwhile people are expecting A RAJA.

  5. 15A is not okay, I think. Speech means oration and not orate

    1. Your allegation is totally wrong. These clues have been picked by by Wordplays.com either from the interactive version of TH or from this blog

    2. Further if you will notice all the clues of today, not just only the ones mentioned by you, appear as the topmost one in Wordplays.com which means they have been picked up on 20 Jan only which further reinforces the fact that no plagiarism is involved. I suggest you tender an unconditional apology here, and reveal your identity rather than hiding behind the Pseudonym of Cryptic_Critic.

  7. First of all who is Cryptic Critic? We do have one by the handle Cryptic Academy and we learnt it is a real person whom we know very well and indeed some of us have met them (neutral pronoun). Please reveal yourself as who you are and also let us know place of residence. I use the handle Chatur Vasi but everyone knows who I am. So first come out into the open.
Before any accusation of plagiarism is made against an author, 'critic' must be sure of their ground. There are some websites that lift/sweep/snatch/scrub/steal clues/answers from newspapers and create the ever-growing database To what purpose I don't know.Till now ALL of then ignored THC from India. Now one site - it must be US-based - does. And it is there that the day's THC clues/answers appear.
A newspaper of repute won't publish plagiarised work. First of all, they would entrust work to a person in whom they have trust. Secondly, if it comes to their notice that even a little paragraph in an article is plagiarised from someone else's article, the culprit will be summarily dismissed from employment.
'Critic' should say who he or she is, apologise and wipe the egg or mud or ink or whatever else on their face. If not, Col must block this handle if that can be done.
