ReplyDelete28A protective cover = carapace, lose half = cara-(pace), twice = cara+cara = caracara = bird.
ReplyDeleteI often say when and where I first came across a new word.
ReplyDeleteTake GRAVID.
That was in 1972 when my wife and I came back home after consulting an Ob-Gyn doctor. The word was in the small booklet wherein she had made her observations.
The doctor was Prema Krishnaswami, an eminent doctor at that time.
I could guess but - newbies please note - I looked it up in a dictionary.
By a curious coincidence,we had both been to the same nice gentle duty conscious doctor. She rushed all the way back from her vacation at Kodaikkanal to attend the delivery (though she had made alt.arrangements- just in case) Nostalgic memories. Year was 1975.

ReplyDelete29A EATATE; ones total pocessions; tESTATE
ReplyDeleteAs usual a nice puzzle from Gridman.I noticed that 29A was not attempted until 9:50. I thought of posting the answer at 11.00. I was happy that the setter and solvers were ' willing to leave' that to me. But my hope was short lived and it was cracked almost immediately. I am all the more happy for it.
ReplyDeleteNow my favourites: 1d, 7d, 14d, 17a and 28a.
Thank you AJ as well as all others.
ReplyDeleteI have read several of Chase's books, borrowing them from Easwari Lending Library. Always original, never pirated editions sold on platforms. I must have been among the first readers to get any latest Chase book from Pazhani. Racy reading. But I never passed over any slang word, quickly jotted on a piece of paper and looked up in a dictionary later leisurely, as meaning can always be guessed from the context. I have read thrillers from more sophisticated writers but I never had any condescension towards Chase.
ReplyDeleteTypo in 2d.
ReplyDelete5a we have enough coma's to read the Anno as (alen)*ET,imu.
The anagram indicator is after the second alien
DeleteStandpoint and sunlit two clues linked beautifully by the czar of cryptic grids in the hindu. Birds were interesting to "chase". Kept me awake late last night as I started solving very late.
