David's determination to expand his CHATTEL gave him sleepless nights which accounted for the PTOSED eyelids on the morn of the PRESS CONFERENCE. DeleteIn the IA version I use the check button after getting most of the solutions and only when I am stuck. Yesterday I had to do so after three answers and today after just one. Quite tough. First time this happened with Dr. X. But once I got a breakthrough, it was smooth sailing. Quite enjoyable.

DeleteIn plenty/abundance can also mean everywhere. Celebrations galore will mean everywhere. CV always says we don't necessarily have to go by the dictionary meaning but go by usage as well. This can be seen in the usage of she/ her in CW's.

But I thought I would look up.
I consulted USA TODAY:Crossword Puzzle Dictionary as it is large print and I can still read it. it doesn't list 'everywhere'.
I didn't see any of many other thesauri in my library because the type is so small and font thick with letters merging into each other and appearing like a thick block. I just can't make out.
I tried an online site.

Oh so many synonyms are there and indeed several will suggest 'galore' at once.
But 'everywhere' is not there.
In that list we have 'crawling with'. So we can accept 'everywhere' too.

We need to go by instinct, sense, experience, etc., and not insist it must be in a dictionary.
And trust the setter whom we know as a very careful setter!
Dear CV Sir, it is very much there in Chambers, Collins and Oxford Dictionary, which is the gold standard anyway. I have posted the references above. Posting them again if you have not seen.

I agree with Chaturvasi sir that "we trust the setter" and a certain word need not necessarily be in a dictionary. But I find that most of the times setters use words which are supported by a dictionary.

OK, if it makes sense. If there is indeed an equivalence grammatically and idiomatically.
It is not that the setter uses Dict A or B or C and the solver is happy to find it in A or B or C.
CV Sir, to be honest, I would be extremely hesitant to use a synonym that is not in a dictionary (Chambers/Collins/Oxford/Miriam-Webster), primarily because I would wonder why it is not included! These dictionaries are quite comprehensive, so it would be really unusual that they miss out on any usage, common or otherwise.

ReplyDeleteToday bar appears in 2d as 'insult in bar'. Here it means Inn as shown in the solution. Insult is Dig which is taken by Inn- IN(DIG)N & worker is Ant.
