Guardian's today's cryptic reproduced 19th Oct 1933 crossie. You can enjoy doing that too
ReplyDeleteThanks Ram..shall try that..1933! That must have been incipient stages of cryptic crosswords ..pre Xim era..no set rules..
DeleteHi Ram, I couldn't get the puzzle..if you have a copy or link, do share
DeleteIf it's a file you can mail me at vasant.srinibadan@gmail.com

ReplyDeletePl give me the link text to the above-mentioned old G cwd.
This is the link to today's (22nd Jan) Guardian cryptic and it says it is set by Paul. No mention of 1933?

CV Sir/Paddy/Vasant - As I had time in the evening, I tried Guardian crossie and surprised to get that one set by somebody with a starting letter A I remember now. Now I see that what Paddy is mentioned. I don't know how this has happened. Sorry for disappointing you all.
ReplyDeleteSerial No was in four digits some 10??.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry; must have been a gremlin at work.
ReplyDeleteRamani,
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing your message @18.50, I went to the Guardian and found two puzzles, One by Paul very latest and the other one 1106 by Anto. I think it was appearing due to some glitch (and it has happened earlier too but the paper will retreat soonest]. So, this time too, this must have disappeared.
Fortunately for us, I didn't refresh the page so far so I still have the grid before me. I was to solve late in the night. But couldn't do so. I saved it now as .pdf and it will be in your mail boxes. Relish it.
Relax friends,
I am sure this is not an old puzzle. First of all, old crosswords did not have bylines. And secondly Anto is a setter of recent years, not of the last century. A work that was on must have got uploaded inadvertently and after a brief appearance withdrawn by the subeditor/intern. Owing to time differences, IST people have seen it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Sir!
DeleteIf my guess is right, this will appear as Guardian Quiptic on Monday
