    4. Chambers doesn't give this alternate spelling. Moreover it's an Indian word and is pronounced as UPANISHAD so I don't think UPANISAD is acceptable

    But a doubt - it is given as Good form (4,4) and not as a sinle 8 letter word in Free Dic. I have not checked Chambers.
