    1. I took C from charge and E from Base.
As you suggest base could also have meant the last letter

      Delete
    2. Base is the def. CE comes from evacuating/emptying charge.

    3. You get CE from 'C[harg]E' on evacuation

    3. Thanks for the consideration on promotion. To me solving a clue is one of intuition and spontaneity. I am little amused by the technical labouring and pedantry that dominates the discussions here. I just visited this forum out of curiosity. I would hardly visit this blog in the future.. If there is any intent to "promote", please don't bother.

    4. My two cents:
An inspired guess, intuition and spontaneity can work wonders to get the ANSWER. But unfortunately it doesn't work for everyone.
Secondly, an important aspect of cryptic clues is that one has to explain how the ANSWER has been arrived at. So technical labouring (which I too may not enjoy) is part and parcel, I am afraid.

  21. 1. While one does solve many clues intuitively, it is the parsing (So called laborious activity) that gives the aha moment. Becos that is when u connect with the setters mind.
This is how slowly, u start acing the different solvers.
    2. Sometimes when words are new or one wants to double check ond csn use google or an online thesaurus- as long as the attempt is not to get a ready made solution.
This is my personal feedback after visiting this blog. From cracking a hand full to consistently getting 100% - i know i have come a long way. It is this blog which has taught me how to solve in a logical, organised & consistent manner.

I hope you have got the answers to your snide comment, from the others who have commented here. All of us here do not like people like you who make such unwanted remarks. We too would not like to see you here if this is what your idea is about Crosswords and this blog. So don't visit this blog in future as you yourself have suggested.
