Just dropping by to plug an Exolve feature that some solvers might find useful. If you click on "Jotter" just under the crossword, you get a scratchpad. You can type letters into it and jumble them repeatedly by clicking on "click here to shuffle."
ReplyDeleteMoreover (and this is a new feature), you can also do simple "anagrammed letter subtraction." For example, for 7D, you might guess that the solution is BENEVOLENT and that BEEN and VIOLENT are used. You can just type (without the quotes) "BEEN VIOLENT - BENEVOLENT =" in the scratchpad. As soon as you type the equals sign, the whole "equation" will be replaced by "I."
"Moon starers - astronomers =" will get cleared away completely.
"asterix - obelix =" will get replaced by "astr - obl"
Do try it and let me know if you have any suggestions/issues. Thanks, and back to the puzzle now :-)

I interpreted "cutesie" as possessing / "having" a special appeal . Imho, "Engineers" (ind) has a bit of solver's creative freedom (SCF) in it ; had it been a more-precise ind like say, "Doctors" - I'd think there's no room for SCF

DeleteI wanted to use 4.. but decided to make it little more convoluted and made it as 15. I think it is slightly unfair on the solver. But given that other clues were straight forward to an extent, I took the liberty to make the clue a little tricky
DeleteNot fair at all. IV can and will be only 4. One can't write Roman numerals like Arabic as individual numbers. At least, there should have been a ?. I was trying to connect with clue 15 D.
Delete#me2 about connecting with 15D. Coupled with xv, solver is totally misdirected. Answer is clear from the crossings. It's not fair, but I will give it to the setter for the deflection. 😎

DeleteThe clue is very tricky but definitely not unfair. A cryptic clue can be as cryptic as possible as long as it still leads to a valid solution. IV should be looked as two separate letters and not as whole. Thats reasonably fair !!
