  2. 19D- what is the purpose if 'starts' in the clue? It is confusing and Needless. I was trying to fix some first letters.

    1. Typo. Please read as of 'starts' instead if 'if'.

    2. Have the same doubt. It has to be the anagram indicator. Is it?

    3. 'starts' is an anind according to http://www.clueclinic.com/index.php/anagram-indicators/

    5. @Paddy: Start-To cause to become displaced or loosened.

    6. @Paddy, in THC its Vidwan's signature anind.
He even used starts to mean start+start with both the meanings (begining and cause to become)

@vasant, i think it has limited usage as anind: causes to become: in some ways has to be final product. So works with full anagram. (Ie where the final solution is obtained by anagram only)
It doesnt work with part anagram, imho. (Because part of anagr doesnt become final soluton)

    7. If start/ starts becomes anind, how do we distinguish between anind/ first letter picking? Does it not become ambiguous?

    8. I don't see it in the list of aninds in the Chambers CW dictionary that I have (print edition) May be it is included in subsequent editions?

    9. It is not in CW Unclued list also. So I take it as non standard.

    10. Its a later day addition from moatly australian editions.
Think about "around" on the same lines.

    11. Intransitive verb form of start (anagrind comes after the fodder) works as anagrind. It means “to move suddenly and violently”.

Clue clinic is a very reliable source, IMHO.

MW lists start (transitive verb) = to cause to become loosened or displaced. So it should also work as anagrind as listed by clue clinic. But I don’t have an example sentence.

      Paddy,
It’s up to the solver to understand the function of an indicator based on the clue . For example, “about” can be used as container ind , reversal ind, anagrind and as a charade component.
