    foolish female - ASSESS - if abbe is masculine, abbess is feminine; if ass is masculine, assess is feminine. But that is only a joke. So the question mark at the end of the clue.b

    Only now I got it!

    The second component, because of its triangular shape, did not appear to me as a shore at all.

    I agreed with Richard because it looks like a piece of stone chipped from the corner of a rectangular slab.
