Interesting VP that you got it as a DD, which I can see works, though I clued it as a charade!
DeleteBala, I wrote the anno in a hurry. When I came back and read the clues again, I did realize the charade of {CEASE} {LESS} would certainly be the more apt one.
DeleteIt did not strike me earlier that the second part could be construed as a straight definition as well. The only issue is that if I did it as a DD it won't be so good, because both the definitions kind of lead to the same meaning.

1A: Grammatically speaking, is it Magical couple inanely portrays or portray...?"
ReplyDeleteGrammar rules have it that collective noun can take singular or plural verb, depending on whether they are acting as one unit or individually. Ergo, both England 'has' and England 'have' can be OK, depending on the context
DeleteVJ: now that the clue has been solved, just to mention that initially I had considered 'portray', with 'insanely' instead of 'inanely'. Changed it to 'portrays' based on the 'couple' being one unit.

ReplyDeleteSuresh: 3D still left I believe
ReplyDeleteI have come across 3d so many times. I was going to say that the word has been handled here in a refreshingly different manner. Though elaborate, everything gels.
ReplyDeleteI may have questions on a few clues, though.
CV: Do post the questions. Maybe I can answer, or perhaps learn something, or others have a point of view

ReplyDelete:-) nick of time
DeleteYou literally caught me napping
DeleteAs I said many clues wre well-written.
ReplyDeleteA few doubts:
18a Note choice for another term (2-8)
***Not sure if "another term" is an apt def for RE-ELECTION.
16 Appeal unjust rate, I have repeatedly done so (9)
***Not sure if the part of speech of the word required is indicated properly.
23 Not sure who's coming to dinner after the movie? (5)
***Not sure if the idea comes out clearly.
What do others think?
I, for one, do not have any issues with 23D
ReplyDeleteThe comments on the other clues are valid.
Will wait for some more time to see if there are other comments, shall respond later
DeleteCV/Suresh: Shall attempt to clarify the questions raised. These are my intentions while clueing, leave it to readers to decide if fair or not. Separate post for each query:
ReplyDelete18a Note choice for another term (2-8)
***Not sure if "another term" is an apt def for RE-ELECTION
From Oxford Dictionary (not my favourite choice, but very similar in others too)
Definition of re-elect:
verb
[with object]
elect (someone) to a further term of office: Wilson was re-elected in September 1974
Derivatives
re-election
noun
When used in sentences, for example:
He is not seeking re-election as President
can be substituted with
He is not seeking another term as President
16 Appeal unjust rate, I have repeatedly done so (9)
ReplyDelete***Not sure if the part of speech of the word required is indicated properly.
Word required is Iterative, which is an adjective, meaning repetitious. 'Repeatedly done so' is an adjective using a phrasal verbal construct. When used in sentences:
It was a process, iterative no doubt
which can be re-written as
It was a process, repeatedly done so no doubt.
Very similar to 'frequently watched' movie for example
23 Not sure who's coming to dinner after the movie? (5)
ReplyDelete***Not sure if the idea comes out clearly.
Clue constructed as a cryptic definition. 'After' in the phrase 'after the movie' is used in the sense of 'derived from' or 'in allusion to' or such similar expressions, in the cryptic reading. Surface reading of course is quite different
btw I like the use of 'Not sure' in your comment!
IMHO:
ReplyDelete18a Note choice for another term (2-8)
I think term is a general expression. It could also mean a semester/ prison sentence etc.
16 Appeal unjust rate, I have repeatedly done so (9)
Agree with CV. The answer to the clue would be ITERATING. Iterative is an adj.
23 Not sure who's coming to dinner after the movie? (5)
I think this clue is fine.
Not sure: Guess
____ who's coming to dinner also asks the same question.
13 A Prohibition beginning to end source of misery (4)BANE(E)
ReplyDelete{BAN}{E}
Thanks Sandhya. Was a typo from me.
Delete23D- I could get the idea and I took it as cryptic and did not try to elaborate my answer in my comments. I dont consider myself an expert and so others must have got it too.
ReplyDelete18A- I wonder if "another term" is replaced by "second term", it may not have raised doubts. I mean it might have been more apt.
Bhala
DeleteThanks for your detailed explanations. When a setter is ready to face questions and when he sets out to answer them, it means he takes his business seriously, has a sense of responsibility and beestows a lot of thought while writing the clues.
