  12. 21a SUBPOENAS :: SUB PO ENAS< :: Small-built suggests that SUBSTITUE (stand-in) is abbreviated. A good shorticator

20d UNITES :: N(IT)ES<- :: A Bengali, famous one at that :: Not sure if 'collaborates' is an apt def. for UNITES

16a ETHEREAL :: Telescopic :: Again not sure if the adj ETHEREAL can be defined as 'celestial spectacle' which is a noun

    1. Though I filled in 21A & 20D I had my doubts.

21A- Is "PO" standard abbreviation for police officer? I was trying to fit in IG,SI etc.

20D- "It" for article was a good change. I was trying to fit in a, an or the and failed. It dawned on me after seeing your comment!

    2. 20 DN UNITES: Collaborates.

I had till I sent the puz to Col, JOINS as the def, but at the last moment changed it, as I felt it was much easier to connect it to unites. Collaborates agreed is a synonym but not apt.

      16 AC: Ethereal:

Again I felt there was something amiss in the clue but have no plausible explanation for not paying heed.

  13. Sorry, when I came in, the 'ethereal' answer was not yet in.

I am not taking any other in compensation for the duplicate.

    1. I am not sure if the substitution is indicated properly. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

    2. I think Phantoms intention was that "a maiden's favourite" is to be taken as "a maiden(M) is favourite(PET)"

      Delete
    3. Col's right.

Maiden changes into favourite(PET), literally, replacing M.

  19. Col,

The computer at the skull cave is on the blink, so we may not get a response from Phantom!

"Call the Phantom anywhere, and he will hear." ... Old jungle saying.

Fortunately, the Skull cave has a Radio room and I was able to SOS for help and it arrived even on a Sunday because:

"No man can refuse the voice of the Phantom." ... another Old jungle saying.
