Any DERANGED DOTARD who sang an ANTHEM in praise or uttered lines like "Can you PICK ME UP" with an outrageous thought of a ONE NIGHT STAND was driven out and denied further and future entry.

Kayal:

On the other she in the dark and backward ABYSM of time had been used as a spy in fact as a RINGER in an assignment.

Lt. Gen. Samuel aka Uncle Sam:

Buy why did OPEN EYED Sam kind of PANIC at the thought of being seen along with Kayal?

    2. I am with Col, Brajesh!

We should strive to annotate all the clues. To be an ace, we have to crack the very difficult ones, as we progress. For these clues, you might to heavily depend on dictionaries initially, to read the setter's mind.

In regard to this clue, although I am not very satisfied with the wordplay, you have already got 50% of the solution. For the remaining, look into the dictionary on hand or online. I am sure you will come back with the correct anno. Goodluck!

    1. This is what I found on googling-
Word History: The curious and charming word izzard, meaning “the letter z, ” is practically limited to certain fixed expressions in American vernacular English, such as from A to izzard, “from beginning to end,” and not to know A from izzard, “not to know even the most basic things.”

      Delete
    2. Whatever you call Z as izzard, ezed, zed, zee
      izzard is archaic for sure.

Is it acceptable to clue archaic words? I thought setters use archaic words only in wp.
