No CW in the paper as well as in the online edition

Detox today without the daily fix.

  1. Oh! Such sad news
Why two days in a row?
    Any reason?

  2. I think Col. hasn't anticipated this scenario. Otherwise, he would have released another one for today too!

  3. No Mumbai edition today maybe - Visarjan. But how come Cochin worked on Onam day?

  4. Sadly, the online version didn't mention about holidays anywhere anytime. That helps us in guessing. The Hindu follows the convention of not including crossword if anywhere in India the paper is not published due to a local holiday. Perhaps to maintain uniformity in crosswords across India perhaps.

  5. Oh forgot there was no CW yday too :( Good that I reserved half of xC to be done later. Brilliant puzzle. Tad easier

  6. Paper seems to a master in stating the obvious. On the days there is no puzzle, it says there is no puzzle. Instead of telling there will be no puzzle the next day :)

  7. I thought Detox was the name of a new setter

  8. CW holidays have become rather frequent. Many states- many holidays- fewer CW's? More detoxes?

  9. I think we had similar situation last year or before.

  11. Col,
Where did you get this announcement? Is it from online paper or print edition?

    1. After seeing the blog I searched it out in the Chennai edition. Yesterday it was more prominent.

    2. This announcement is from the e-paper

  12. The announcement will always be in the main Sports page. Or, unusually, a second Sports page. Today the main Sports page is not a complete Sports page without any advt. If there were no ad at all, the announcement - sole non-news boxed insertion - would have hit Paddy in between his eyes.

  13. Stumbled here while searching for reasons for the missing crossword. Realised how much of an addict I'm!!

  14. I stopped subscribing to the papers from the vendor. The monopolistic vendors in this area supply the paper after 7.30 AM, by which time I would have completed the grid. (I have no big interest in reading the other news items.)
We had hub.mayyam before but that's gone now!

    2. The last post in The Hub was on 18th August..
I can still access through my Idea network

    4. I am scared to read the note on blocked sites that it would entail Rs.3 Lakhs fine and 3 years jail term. This should be applicable to all network operators mandatorily.
Now,your Idea seems to have ignored it. Who will be punished? Ha, ha!

    1. I hope that doesn't happen. We will at least have the online grid, if we are lucky..Otherwise, you can keep one special handy

    2. Not likely. Banks/ buses/ autos are working here in Chennai. So no reason why a newspaper should close down. So hopeful- ExCnequer or otherwise.

  20. DETOX ? hahaha ! Reminds me of my entry into Nairobi on posting. I found most of the gated houses displaying a board: MBWA KALI . I wondered who this multimillionaire guy is owning so many houses ! It was clarified that it is a notice meaning: BEWARE OF DOGS,(in Swahili language) !! to keep intruders away ! I realised how much danger I was in, had I ignored this valuable advic agai#nst my pet aversion (pun intended)

    1. Good morning Raju,
It's really scary. Not knowing local language can be lethal.
      Don't take dogs light,
      because they bite.
