No 13037, Thursday 10 Sep 2020, Sunnet

Solution to 4A has been deliberately left unsolved and is to be answered only by a non-regular/novice commenter, with proper annotation. Those who have answered earlier in the week, please give others a chance.

Though the e-paper says the setter is Afterdark, this is actually by Sunnet!!

  1. Dr RKE's mother passed away this morning, she was 92. My heartfelt condolences to him and his family on behalf of everyone here. I am told she too was an avid cruciverbalist.
Please send condolence messages directly to him and not through this blog page.
He can be contacted at 9600976679 or via e-mail at drrke12@gmail.com

  3. Col.,
    12A- water frezes at 32 F (equivalent to 0C) and not - 212.
Probably you got cofused with -273 deg which is absolute 0.

    1. Zero f is an anagram... :-)

    2. Oops, my mistake. Thanks Paddy, will amend that

      Delete
    3. Technically it's -273 is K not F.

      Delete
    4. 212°F is boiling point of water, not freezing point.

      Delete
    5. 0 °F, was established as the freezing temperature of a solution of brine made from a mixture of water, ice, and ammonium chloride (a salt).
32F or 0C is ice cold, which is when pure water starts to freeze.
So technically zero F is correct.

    6. For the records,
      Minus 273 is °C,
      0° is K (Kelvin), and
      minus 459° is °F.
These are all equivalent and called absolute Zero.

  4. Chennai's print edition also gives credit to Afterdark and I was a little confused.

    2. Great! My knowledge of "Rock Music" is very limited.

  6. IA version gives the setter's name as Sunnet. Saint is most commonly abbreviated as st, not s.
    VDS Prasad

    ReplyDelete
  7. So the setter is Sunnet (as given in IA version) or Afterdark (as per print edition)- Which is correct?

    ReplyDelete
  8. It goes without saying that the setter is Sunnet. It has a theme and a pangram. And it is his second grid in this round. Is this not enough, Ram?

  9. ...and Col. has said so in his preamble.

  11. Pasting a comment about yesterday's blog.
Also it has about 4 thousand sutras, so thousand can also be considered as a theme word. Imagine all the facets of a langauge expressed in just 4000 rules ( In all about 10000 words). An amazing feat.

    1. I saw your post late yesterday. I am doubly happy that I have just started on a Sanskrit Diploma course of Sastra University and had learned about Panini and some of the Grammar rules. We had our first on line classes on Sat.& Sunday. Fresh in my memory.

    2. Admire your interest in learning our Vedic language. Best of luck!

  12. The bands I had in my list - Rolling Stones, Dire Strait(s), Deep Purple, Eagles and Queen. Ofcourse as the Col. has stated, since the number of band names is very large almost every word can potentially be from a name of a band.

    1. Thanks Ram!
But you have missed Sree-Sree [Katalam Sreeram at 18].
As I see it, it is going to be difficult to climb further as there is hardly any place!
Earlier, we used to be there in the list even with one mistake [or two]. I think those days are gone now.

    2. Most likely she has made a mistake as there were 113 all correct entries

  15. What is the anno of 16A(Knee)
Tip of needle going up, penetrating body part (4)
    I biffed it.

    1. KNEE {K(+N)EE(-N)}
      Penetrating = keen
      Tip of needle = N

      Delete
    2. If you take out N (tip of needle) only eek (going up) remains. Does it indicate pain?

      Delete
    3. K[+N]EE[-n] penetrating=keen
You may however have knee-jerk reaction to say that the indication is not very clear that the tip should move to second place. But knowing that this is body part, we have to take it take it there.
