5a VERSUS - hidden clue solVERS USually
ReplyDelete14a RECREANT - Acrostic
18a - CADENCES - Anagram of (C(One hundred) + DANCE) with ES(Spain)
6d - ERASE - hidden clue - DenvER A SEcret
16d - THANKLESS - WHEN = THAN - KLESS (from first letter of subsequent words)
I think 18a anno might be wrong.
DeleteSuggested anno - one hundred = C anagram of dance = Adenc Spain = ES gives Cadences
Not sure how when is a synonym of THAN
Delete"scarcely was the work completed than it was abandoned"
DeleteYes, the (admittedly non-obvious) "scarcely ... than/when ..." construct is indeed what I leaned on, thanks sree_sree.

4D. EASIER {ERASE}* around {sl I p}
I'll admit, "third slip" for I is not ideal. But I think occasionally (truly occasionally!) bending the rules just slightly is OK. Here's the detailed anno from my notes for 4d:
DeleteDef: more uncomplicated. ERASE* {6 refers to 6d, ERASE} {... runs (anagrind)} around {over} (-sl)I(-p) {taking some liberty here to use "third slip" to signify picking the third letter from "slip"}.
Can someone please explain how ERASE is obtained?
ReplyDelete6D is Erase
