  4. 19D. Madeira with island as definition annotated as Made by IRA (Irish Army). If right, I believe definition should have been islands in plural

    1. Map indicates the main island in the group as Madeira. Definition seems fine

    2. Oh. OK. Thanks. I assumed maybe it could be another ardenism as this 'is - land' :-)

    3. It is an Ardenism, applied to the answer - Made IRA

    4. I think it is a simple charade:
      DID=MADE
      SOME FIGHTERS=IRA

    6. Yes, Prasad. I am aware of it. But since it is already answered by CPC, I tried to just elaborate.

    7. kkr garu,
      I tried this way. Did-made ; RA-Royal artillery (fighters); I for Island
      Hence (MADE)(I)(RA)

    8. Island is the definition - i thought.
      So MADE + IRA

  5. 20Ac - why is Purge defined as Castor oil?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because of its usage as purgative.

      Delete
    2. thought that..but the words castor oil themselves don't lead to purge as an answer..and there is no associated linkages

      Delete
    3. Oh ok.. it's actually listed as a synonym in Thesaurus..sorry

      Delete
    4. Purge in the dated usage meant laxative.

    1. Indeed tough going. Had many blanks / annotations not clear until this blog helped to see reason! Campstool, curia, lentigo, codicil and surprisingly headland was a blank!

  7. In 25 across, what is the purpose of the word "will"?

    1. Only for surface reading- without that the surface reading will not make sense. No cryptic part. Connecting words are required for surface reading which is an essential part.

  8. Paddy sir \ KKR Garu, The anno. posted by me @ 13:33. Can use I - for Island. Coz., puzzle mentioned as fighters. Hence, I have considered as RA.

    1. I for island is OK but where is the insertion indicator.
How does I get in between made and RA!

    2. No, if you use I for island, where will the definition be? [Of course, you can use I for island elsewhere but not here]
Here, fighters=IRA i.e., Irish Republican Army [a standard usage in crosswords]

  9. Today's was a classic Arden. Totally blank at the first read but could slowly build it clue by clue. Lots of words new to me - plaice, lentigo, almoner, curia. Only done with the thesaurus by my side.

  10. Same here. Initially a blank. But did all except CURIA
My fav - CASTIGATE, CAMPSTOOL, AMPERSAND
