    1. Have a good trip. Fortunately there are no issues between Karnataka/ AP- Telengana.

    2. Have a nice trip. A few Sundays back, you would recollect meeting some gunners (though you are not RE, nor they RA) as given in 29d, and I am sure it was not a rare occasion too...

  3. Too many things happened today for my comfort-
I was not sure if the style of placing Ac.& Dn. is by Incognito or TH. Took a loooong time to understand how the clues were placed, hindering my concentration.
Why the answers in reverse for today's CW? Is it going to be a permanent feature following the red letter of on line version?
I was bowled by the use of sheep in plural and the important part of the clue in the next column did not help either.
Anyway, loved the Air Force spl. continuation, which was expected.
    KKR,
Unable to help you. I had to wait for the print edition to be delivered after the disappointment.

    1. Thanks Paddy, normalcy is restored in the Hindu online edition. I just saw it there in its usual shape.

  4. There seems to be a layout redesigning exercise going on at TH...
Yesterday's Crossword and Sudoku solutions are given elsewhere in the paper and today's solutions are given alongside. Interestingly, the instructions for solving the Sudoku are given, not with the puzzle, but with the solution. While the symbol next to the word "Across" looks ok, the one next to "Down" is all black! The contrast between black and white squares in the grid also is very faint. The last 3 Down clue numbers have a period after them, in contrast with other clue numbers. The last Across clue is partly out of the shaded box. In sum, the layout guys seem to be having a field day.

    1. They had finally got a location and layout that was fine, but sometimes things don't last ...

  5. A couple of other words belong to the airforce "slang" theme ...

  6. Some of the defects mentioned by you-(e.g) like symbol being black, part of clue lying outside the box etc. are not there in the Chennai edition. He seems to have been awake alright. They are not black squares but light grey ones. Strange are the ways of TH which are becoming stranger. I do hope they stick to this location.

  7. Noticed all the defects mentioned by K & Paddy..didnt stop me from enjoying this puzzle....grid sent by my niece in whatsapp from the print edition...

  8. Very instinctive xword.. answers popped for most asap .. and parsing happened later.. was on roll so was guilty of glancing at keywords and trying to solve.. worked mostly.. except had slang as sling - what with Singapore in the clue :) which hindered Mae West for a lil while.. dawned soon enuf..

  9. Remembered the only indian movie with airforce backdrop(are there others?)..Vijeta..produced & acted by Shashi Kapoor & directed by Shyam Benegal..wonderfully cinematagraphed by Govind Nihlani & music by Vanraj Bhatia
.That was a movie well made..a memorable one..

    1. You, no doubt, are too young to remember Arasdana and Sharmilee

      Delete
    2. Incidentally both were made just after '71 and Shashi Kapoor acted in Sharmilee. His son acted in Vijeta

      Delete
    3. Of course Aradhana I remember very well(Kora kagaz tha mann mera..bago mein bahar hain..mere sapno ki rani kab aayengi tu..title song)
And all songs of Sharmilee(though dont remember the movie at all).
Both movies songs composed by S.D.
      Thanks for pointing this out

      Delete
    4. Aradhana title song was sung by SD in his distinctive nasal twang

      Delete
    5. You are correct, Raghu, Aradhana was made in '69

      Delete
    6. Incidentally, around the same time, I saw Prem Pujari in the AFS Hindon movie hall, which too had a song by SD, the title song, with his distinct pronunciation of "Himalay" in the line "kahaan re Himaalay aisa, kahaan aisa paani, yaheee woh zameen jiski duniya deewani "

    7. And of course the wonderful..shaukiya mein gaula jaye fulo sa sharab..usme phir milaye ji thoda sa shabab...rangeela re...

      Delete
    8. That particular verse spawned a hilarious spoof which I cannot share here in for obvious reasons ...

      Bandar mein lagaayi jaaye,
      Gadhe ka dimaag,
      Aur usme fir lagaaye jaaye,
      Khoob saare baal,
      Hoga joh namoona tayyaar ,
      ------ hai

    9. Vasant, I think your shabaab and sharaab bottles have got exchanged ... Take care ...;)

    10. He..he..it has indeed!
      Obly you would have noticed!

    11. And of course the lyrics of Neeraj, the sublime poet(who also wrote lyrics of Sharmilee), takes off in every song..aRangeela re..phulo ke rang se..
Thanks for reviving so many memories

  10. For those who did not get the other two theme words ... pancake is slang for a bad landing .. E other theme word is Slang :)

  11. Pancake for bad landing- new but logical and interesting. You seem to have a lot of inside dope. Interest in the subject makes all the difference.

  14. Kishore: How do you manage to make such simple and solvabe clues with themes ? Enjoyed both yesterday's and today's immensely. Adobe flash player was hanging fire all throughout yesterday.

I am clearing all the odd-shaped cuttings of the BS crosswords. Must be around 300. Came across a very unusual clue: VvV (4,1,4)

and APER reminded me of another : Paper clones? (7)
