Nina- Sholay/ Gabbar=> Middle column/ Middle row

DeleteViresh's notes as under
ReplyDeleteNotes
The theme of this crossword is the 1975 Hindi movie, SHOLAY, seen as a nina running down the middle column. The movie's iconic villain, GABBAR, is a nina in the middle row.
The following solution words are thematic, alluding to various elements of Sholay:
5A. BULLETS.
10A. WIDOW.
23D. JAIL.
26D. HOOFS.
28A. TONGA.
With some latitude, a few more solution words can be called thematic:
5D. BATTLE.
13D. TRAP.
25D. SLAUGHTERS.
The surface of 12A uses the thematic word, "Thakur."
This puzzle is a pangram.
Prime time!
I was quite pleased to see the THC serial number that this crossword landed on: 13591. It is a prime number. While that is nice in itself, prime numbers are not that rare around this number (roughly every tenth number is prime in this neighbourhood). But this is a palindromic prime—its reverse, 19531 is also prime! Further, of the five possible 4-digit numbers that you get by deleting one digit from 19531, three are prime! And one of those three happens to be my house number in my street address!!
Personal notes: I finished setting this crossword at a time of another surgery in the family (this time it was my dog, Oona—all is well now, thankfully). Joe Root shepherded an incredible test match victory for England against New Zealand, and I must say that watching good test cricket even when India isn't involved is usually more fun for me these days than watching limited overs cricket even when India is playing!
Thanks for posting my notes, Col.!
DeleteTest cricket Vs Limited over (50/20)
ReplyDeleteRed ball/ White call
Connoisseurs of the game still prefer Test cricked- their say is that it is unadulterated cricket!
We had a discussion here a few days ago about Geared vehicles Vs.Automatic. I would say it is something similar.
Amazed at the analysis f Prime Numbers. I was reminded Ramanujan's comment on seeing a car no. 1729? Yes. The least no. which can be expressed as a sum of 2 cubes in 2 diff.ways-
12 cubed+ 1 cubed= 10 cubed + 7 cubed ( I don't know how to write to the power of in computer)
I will take time to study the details given by Viresh. Great!
Is 12 cube written as (12>3)?

DeleteThank you. It is on the 6 (numbered) key.
Delete12³ can be written on my Android phone

DeleteTypo in Paddy sir's equation
Delete1729 = 1³ + 12³ = 9³ + 10³
(It is not equal to the sum of the cubes of 7 & 10 but 9 & 10)

DeleteSorry for the error. Probably I was too excited.
DeleteWonderful puzzle sir! Because of the THEME and NINA perhaps, most of the clues - going by the setter's standards - were relatively easy (to me!)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI do wish he is able to spin good CW's on non surgery days as well!
ReplyDeleteWe want more from him- of course without surgeries (which could preferably done on the CW sheet!)
Surgery? Viresh is not a Doctor
DeleteHe had said he had completed this puzzle while waiting during a surgery- for a second time.
Delete"Another surgery in the family" he had said.
Ok
DeleteHeh, yes, I hope there is no more surgery in the near future!
DeletePrint version gives the CW no.as 13590 and not 13591. Is it different in On line edition?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, glad we were able to get some insights into Prime nos.
Sorry. The fault is on me. I was looking at yesterday's paper. Apologies.
ReplyDeleteFantastic and fun grid by Gussalufz
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Delete25a - I impressed a lot. I used to read Reader's digest wherein ,one single page exclusively mentioned as LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE. This was my unforgettable moment as Gussalufz mentioned the same word.
ReplyDeleteMy Fav. are CHILDISHLY, LEAP YEAR, SLAUGHTERS , ELDER. Thanks to Col.sir for friday special as well as Mexican food - FAJITAS.
An engrossing puzzle. Thanks Gussalufz!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteSholay and why it continues to engross us:
ReplyDeleteA run of the mill theme , based on many such stories like Seven Samurai, why does it still fascinate us?
Superb script, dialogue, back ground music, acting, songs, dance, masala, etal.
Who would have thought after almost 50 years after its release we would have a crossword discussing it. Hats off to Salim-Javed , R.D.Burman and Ramesh Sippy and all the crew of Sholay.
I did create a Sholay puzzle, certainly not as good as this one!
ReplyDeleteA final note: this is probably the last time that I'll use this particular grid. Two problems with this grid: (1) It has 34 lights, which is probably a bit too much (for solving *and* setting *and* typesetting!), and (2) There is a long black diagonal from the bottom left to the top right, which means that the top left part is a bit disconnected from the bottom right part. I requested the THC editor to allow me to change this grid and they agreed, so you'll see the replacement grid in my next crossword. The new grid also has two 3-letter lights, which will be a fun new dimension for me.
