  39. Viresh's notes as under

    Notes

The theme of this crossword is the 1975 Hindi movie, SHOLAY, seen as a nina running down the middle column. The movie's iconic villain, GABBAR, is a nina in the middle row.

The following solution words are thematic, alluding to various elements of Sholay:

    5A. BULLETS.
    10A. WIDOW.
    23D. JAIL.
    26D. HOOFS.
    28A. TONGA.

With some latitude, a few more solution words can be called thematic:

    5D. BATTLE.
    13D. TRAP.
    25D. SLAUGHTERS.

The surface of 12A uses the thematic word, "Thakur."

    This puzzle is a pangram.
    Prime time!

I was quite pleased to see the THC serial number that this crossword landed on: 13591. It is a prime number. While that is nice in itself, prime numbers are not that rare around this number (roughly every tenth number is prime in this neighbourhood). But this is a palindromic prime—its reverse, 19531 is also prime! Further, of the five possible 4-digit numbers that you get by deleting one digit from 19531, three are prime! And one of those three happens to be my house number in my street address!!

Personal notes: I finished setting this crossword at a time of another surgery in the family (this time it was my dog, Oona—all is well now, thankfully). Joe Root shepherded an incredible test match victory for England against New Zealand, and I must say that watching good test cricket even when India isn't involved is usually more fun for me these days than watching limited overs cricket even when India is playing!

  40. Test cricket Vs Limited over (50/20)
    Red ball/ White call
Connoisseurs of the game still prefer Test cricked- their say is that it is unadulterated cricket!
We had a discussion here a few days ago about Geared vehicles Vs.Automatic. I would say it is something similar.
Amazed at the analysis f Prime Numbers. I was reminded Ramanujan's comment on seeing a car no. 1729? Yes. The least no. which can be expressed as a sum of 2 cubes in 2 diff.ways-
    12 cubed+ 1 cubed= 10 cubed + 7 cubed ( I don't know how to write to the power of in computer)
I will take time to study the details given by Viresh. Great!

    5. Typo in Paddy sir's equation
      1729 = 1³ + 12³ = 9³ + 10³
(It is not equal to the sum of the cubes of 7 & 10 but 9 & 10)

  48. Sholay and why it continues to engross us:
A run of the mill theme , based on many such stories like Seven Samurai, why does it still fascinate us?
Superb script, dialogue, back ground music, acting, songs, dance, masala, etal.
Who would have thought after almost 50 years after its release we would have a crossword discussing it. Hats off to Salim-Javed , R.D.Burman and Ramesh Sippy and all the crew of Sholay.

  49. I did create a Sholay puzzle, certainly not as good as this one!

  50. A final note: this is probably the last time that I'll use this particular grid. Two problems with this grid: (1) It has 34 lights, which is probably a bit too much (for solving *and* setting *and* typesetting!), and (2) There is a long black diagonal from the bottom left to the top right, which means that the top left part is a bit disconnected from the bottom right part. I requested the THC editor to allow me to change this grid and they agreed, so you'll see the replacement grid in my next crossword. The new grid also has two 3-letter lights, which will be a fun new dimension for me.
