Solution to 5A has been deliberately left unsolved and is to be answered only by a non-regular / novice commenter, with proper annotation. Those who have answered earlier in the week, please give others a chance.
There is a NINA in the grid, same to be identified only by a novice commenter.

ReplyDeleteCorrected, thanks
Delete5A eetent (range) of long wave signal - REDNESS - Cut - REDNES back SENDER - Transmitter
ReplyDeleteWell done VU.
DeleteCan I have your full name.
You are hereby promoted from novice/Non-regular to Regular.
Thank you Col. Sir. My name is V Usha
DeleteGood solve Usha. I was struggling with the anno. Redness came to mind but didn't know it had anything to do with longwave signals
Deletesame here
DeleteAny novice to identify the NINA?
ReplyDeleteImage of the NINA will be uploaded after I get home in the afternoon, provided some Novice identifies it by then
Thanks, but I hope the clues yield after some probing, next time! As a setter, it is much more satisfying to have solvers find some clues challenging, but ultimately solvable!
ReplyDeleteHint for the thematic ninas (there are four): two clue surfaces are connected to the theme (27a. is one of them).
ReplyDeleteI did see c&h
DeleteTime to share since no one so far seems to know.
DeleteCol. is also no back home, obviously.
Calvin, Hobbes, Susie, spiff
DeleteYay, you've spotted all four, sree_sree!
DeleteCol. Saab,
ReplyDeleteIn the context of 21-D, I could not understand the logic (annotation) with which it has been solved as CHINESE. Please enlighten me. Thanks in advance....
Old Amsterdam (as the underlined link shows) is a type of cheese.
DeletePopular:in
So "in" replaces "e" (some ecc.....)
Sincere thanks for this clarification.
Delete25A- Cool=Hot?
ReplyDeleteYes, in the sense of "trendy" (a delightful subversion of the language, imo :-))
DeleteHere's another setter exploiting this subversion:
Hot—or not? (4) By Mudd in Financial Times: https://www.fifteensquared.net/2018/08/23/financial-times-15934-by-mudd/
Thank you. Cool! We have to be on the alert.
Delete@Viresh Wanted to let you know that link you shared was immensely helpful in creating a grid for Sunday special. Thank you for creating and sharing it :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, that makes me glad! The link (for others) is for Exet, a free open-source web app that helps with all aspects of crossword construction, including creating grids that follow the expected norms. It can be accessed (best from a desktop/laptop) at http://exet.app
DeleteA lovely and tough one to solve today. Enjoyed all the same.
ReplyDeleteThanks, RNP!
DeleteThanks everyone, for giving it a go, and thanks Colonel Gopinath for blogging!
ReplyDeleteHere are my notes for this crossword:
Notes
The theme of this crossword is Bill Watterson's much-loved cartoon strip, Calvin and Hobbes, about the adorably precocious little boy Calvin and his philosophical stuffed tiger, Hobbes.
CALVIN can be spotted in a nina running up the middle column, and HOBBES is a nina in the middle row. SUSIE is a nina running down diagonally in the northeast corner (Susie Derkins is Calvin's favourite frenemy), and SPIFF is a nina rinning down diagonally in the southwest corner (Spaceman Spiff is one of Calvin's favourite alter egos).
In addition, the surfaces of these two clues are thematic:
10d. The surface refers to Calvin and Hobbes and Watterson.
27a. The surface might be seen as talking about Hobbes.
Extraordinary!
DeleteI thought 28a referred to SPIFF. That's haow I actually searched the grid after getting c&h from 27a (tiger).
DeleteHeh, a happy coincidence, wasn't intentional! :-)
DeleteAha moment!
DeleteIn spite of being a fan and regular follower of Calvin & Hobbs and of course his alter ego and frenemy (as you put it) I feel it as a bad miss and should have spotted it.
Nothing is missed by Prasad(Sree-Sree) Hats off to both.
Spiff is ON today in the strip in Deccan Chronicle being caught by Miss.Wormwood!
